This work plunges us into the mysterious depths of the seabed. The canvas
creates a disturbing relationship with the spectator from the outset: a fishwoman
looks at us staring, as his hand moves toward us, seeming to touch — or
threaten to break — the cracked glass that separates us from it.
Around the siren gravitates a universe full of marine and mythical references
: Titanic and Atlantis, symbols of engulfed civilizations, alongside vicissitudes
(of Jason of Cairos) of the underwater world, a scaphandrier, an octopus, the abysses,
the nautilus, jellyfish, a shark, a sailboat, buried treasures, corals and
ancient amphorae..
Each element participates in a rich visual narrative, mixing myth, history and
imaginary. The sea appears here as a space of memory, danger and fasci-
nation, populated by secrets and remains of the past.
Will the siren break the glass? The work invites the spectator to question what
still separates us from this deep universe and on what could, at any moment, come
to upset this fragile balance.

Sylvaine Merlet’s painting is a crossing.
A dive into the visible and invisible layers of the world, where human, nature
and the imagination intertwined. His images are born of a need to hard what escapes
the words: the emotions buried, the collective memories, the silent bonds that unite the
beings.
The look is at the heart of his approach. It is threshold, passage, mirror. It’s through him that he’s
